How to Use These Letters
In the Montessori classroom, sandpaper letters are one of the most important tools for teaching reading and writing. Children trace the textured letters with their fingers while saying the letter's sound, engaging three senses at once — touch, sight, and hearing.
Traditional Montessori Sizing
Traditional Montessori sandpaper letter boards come in several sizes:
- Large boards (~19cm × 14cm / 7.5" × 5.5") — best for preschool children ages 3–4
- Medium boards (~19cm × 12cm / 7.5" × 4.7") — for ages 4–5
- Small boards (~16cm × 12cm / 6.3" × 4.7") — for ages 5+
The PDF above prints each letter at full page size, which is ideal for younger children. Scale down to 75% when printing for older learners.
Making Your Own Sandpaper Letters
- Print each letter on card stock (heavy paper works best).
- Cut out the white letter shape from each card.
- Trace the letter onto fine-grit sandpaper (or felt, glitter paper, or textured fabric).
- Cut and glue the textured letter onto a blank card — blue card for vowels, red card for consonants.
- Let dry completely before use.
The Three-Period Lesson
Use the classic Montessori three-period lesson to introduce each letter:
- "This is..." — Trace the letter and say its sound. "This is /b/."
- "Show me..." — Place 2-3 letters out. "Show me /b/."
- "What is this?" — Point to a letter. "What sound does this make?"
Always teach the sound the letter makes, not its name. For example, teach /s/ (the hissing sound), not "ess."
